Learn to make basic nutritious, delicious budget-friendly meals

CAPE TOWN - Chef Nwabisa Lisa is heading to Cape Town to offer basic cooking classes to individuals and groups.
Participants will learn how to make nutritious, delicious budget-friendly meals from scratch.
Lisa draws on her own cooking experience to teach new concepts.
“My classes introduce participants to new ingredients, teaches them to integrate those ingredients creatively in their dishes, and assists them to expand their skills while preparing a home-made meal. After the class, I serve the full meal which is prepared fresh.”
Lisa said her classes were geared towards foodies with a genuine passion for the culinary arts and who were interested in preparing quality dishes.
“I am not a typical chef, because I am self-taught, but I did a shadow chef at Chefs Training and Innovation Academy, a chef training school based in Stellenbosch. I felt privileged and excited when I was 8 years old because this is something I have always wanted to do. I studied finance, and then ventured into entertainment by focusing on media-related events, which finally led me to my genuine passion – cooking,” she said.
In 2020, Lisa started offering cooking lessons to locals in Gqeberha, which soon became as popular in Cape Town. She now also offers classes in Johannesburg, and has starred in a cooking feature on the television show “Afternoon Express”. This interest was fuelled by pictures she posted on social media of some of the dishes she cooks at home and for clients.
“Many of my followers were interested in learning how to cook these dishes too,” Lisa said.
Her recipes are based on simple, affordable ingredients that can be used to make some of the best cuisine. Although Lisa loves whipping up African dishes, she is also fond of Asian and Italian food.
Lisa’s October class will focus on summer dishes such as salads, grills, seafood, and quick dinners.

- 1 onion finely chopped
- 1 sweet potato diced
- ½ cup corn
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 2 tsp flour
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup chicken stock
- salt and Pepper
- 2 tbs butter
- 250g salmon fried in olive oil
- 250 ml fresh cream
- bacon and parsley for garnish
- 1 tbs of butter
- 1 tsp of crushed garlic
- ½ cup of cheddar cheese
Heat a pan with butter, and sauté onion until soft. Add garlic, and as soon as it releases the aroma, add sweet potato and lower the heat. Add flour and stir till everything comes together. If it is too dry, add a teaspoon of butter. Season with salt and pepper and add chicken stock. Continue to stir until the flour has dissolved and a sauce has formed. Leave to simmer until the sweet potato is cooked.
On the side, season salmon with salt and pepper and fry with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 3 minutes on each side. Once done, set aside to rest.
Once your sweet potato is cooked, add the peas and corn and simmer for 2 minutes. Add cream and cheese and allow to thicken on low heat. Once thick, add salmon. Plate, garnish with fried bacon, fresh parsley and corn, and enjoy.
